Chapter Nine

On Thursday morning, Tom checked his schedule. He had a noon appointment with a client on Saturday, so he fired off a text to Max, letting him know he wasn’t available until the late afternoon. There wasn’t a reply right away, but then Max had said he had a lecture at eight thirty, so he was likely deep into teaching.

So Tom stuck his nose down into paperwork, and got started on the day.

There was something mind numbing about legal procedures, and those soothed much of Tom’s worries away, until Aaron rapped on his door. “Hey, how’d the hockey game with Dr. Hotty go?”

Tom started. “Uh—fine? Fine. Yeah.”

“Uh oh.” Aaron stepped into the room.

Oh god, he didn’t need to be cross-examined by Aaron—fucking—Taylor. Tom raised his hands. “No, it’s fine. The game was great. Lots of fun. He invited me back to the locker room, and I met a bunch of his co-workers.”

“Uh huh.” Aaron crossed his arms.

“Then I panicked because he’s way the fuck too good for me and nearly broke up with him, but he took me to that really expensive French place outside of town and kept me from falling apart, so I guess we’re dating dating.”

The expression Aaron got would have been amusing if it hadn’t been aimed at Tom. “Oh my god, you’re impossible. He’s not too good for you.” He marched over to Tom’s desk, reached past him, and grabbed his stress ball. Then he beaned it off Tom’s head. “He’s perfect for you, you nincompoop!”

Tom sat there stunned. “Really?”

Aaron threw up his hands. “Oh my god, yes!” Then he marched out of the office, leaving Tom to stare at the empty door.

A minute later, his phone chirped several times, his new text alert. He rotated around.

That’s fine. I had a thought about Saturday. Do you have ice skates?
